Proterodeinus spinoculmatilis by Sanrou Proterodeinus spinoculmatilis by Sanrou

Proterodeinus spinoculmatilis is a medium sized Policapta predator specialized in hunting small blandopodas.

Living in packs up to 20 individuals, Proterodeinus is a really active and agile creature that lives on Eden Valley. It hunts large herds of blandopoda by scaring them, making them jump and then running on the ground while following the falling prey, in a jump and catch game.

Their mandibular head is equipped with a strong set of muscles and a three part jaw specialized in crushing the brandopoda’s hard shell.

The blue “spines” on its back are residual skin and are used for visual communication within the pack.

Sorry

Magnifying Glass I never get tired of seeing how well you draw the facial anatomy of your unique creatures (especially the mouth parts).

Thanks!
Things need to work to make sense, so i do put a lot of attention on the anatomical mechanisms of my creatures. I'm glad that you see that  :D

Now this thing is a bastard and a half, a true triumph of speculative evolution and biology.

Definitely it's like nothing I've ever seen and it stands out from many many other alternate evolution biology creatures I've seen.

Well just looking at it, I can see how it would run, eat and see. Those are huge points for organism realism.

Then I look beyond the parts and see that it comes from an evolutionary line like nothing ever seen on earth.

Youre back! Missed your aliens. You continue to be an inspiration. Love the design, its immediately familiar with terrestrial life but upon closer examination it becomes so alien and disturbing!

Love the design, especially the complex jaw structure. Quite a unique hunting style too! :D
What sort of eye structure do these creatures have? It looks vaguely like a chameleon's eye, but it also seems like it would have a pinhole-type eye structure.

Thank you. :D
The thing that look like a chameleon's eyes is a puffy membrane used for hearing, pretty much external eardrums. They have two pairs of pinhole eyes close to it and a extra pair of infrared "eyes" in their mandibular head (the white semi-circle on the B&W sketch of the jaw).

Those are EARS?? :o Even cooler! :D
Say, what's their nervous system like? Do they have a brain in the head, or even a brain at all? Maybe separate ganglions for different functions?

For the "brain"... Imagine... three rubbery sacks the size of a human stomach filled with some gooey water where millions of electrical hair filaments dance. Or something like that. :D

I love these mouth mechanisms :D
they allow the creatures to give off a "cute" impression, and then they completely  change when they prepare to feed

That sounds like a trait in Brandopodas that can go away in a million years or less of evolution. I wonder how the Proterodeinus will adapt?

It's kinda hard to predict that. Especially when the planet is in a process of cooling off and will be a snowball in 40 million years or so. :)

You are one of the most creative speccers I know, you have been incredibly successful in making wildlife completely unlike that on Earth, and I aspire to meet that level of creativity.
